How to compare commercial CCTV quotes.

Look beyond the camera count. Compare what each system will let your business see and do.

Two quotes can list the same number of cameras and still describe very different installations. For a Perth shop, office or warehouse, the useful comparison starts with the views you need and how your team will use the recordings.

Start with the view, not the camera count.

Make a short list of the areas that matter: an entrance, a loading area, a counter or a yard. For each one, explain what you need to understand from the footage. A wide view of activity and a detailed view at a doorway are different requirements.

Ask each installer to explain the proposed positions and any limits. Changing light, headlights, sheltered entries and activity after closing should be part of that conversation. You do not need to choose a camera model before you can describe the problem.

Ask how you will find a recording.

A live picture is only one part of a CCTV system. Ask how an authorised member of staff would search for an event, export a clip and manage access. Include the people who will actually use the system in the handover.

Agree the retention requirement with your organisation, then ask how the proposed recording setup supports it. Avoid treating a quoted storage capacity as a promise of a fixed number of days without the recording assumptions.

Compare the whole installation.

Ask what the quote includes for cabling, mounting, recording equipment, network coordination, testing and handover. If existing equipment will stay, have that listed alongside the items being replaced.

Installation access also matters. Explain opening hours, busy areas and any work that needs to be coordinated with your team. A low equipment price does not tell you how much work is included at the property.

  • Camera positions and purpose of each view
  • Recording, viewing and export arrangements
  • Equipment and cabling retained or replaced
  • Installation access, testing and handover
  • Optional work, ongoing charges and support arrangements

Bring a clear brief to the conversation.

Your suburb, property type, existing system and the problem you want to solve are enough to start. Detailed layouts can be discussed privately later. Ask for unclear items to be explained before comparing the final proposals.

Plan your CCTV installation.

Tell Craig what you need to see, where the property is and whether you have an existing system.
