Plan your security installation.

A practical guide to the property, equipment and day-to-day details an installer needs.

You do not need a complete specification or a camera count before speaking to an installer. What helps most is a clear description of the premises, the problem and who will use the system.

1. Describe the property.

Start with the suburb or town, property type and areas that need attention. Think about entrances, staff-only rooms, loading areas, yards and gates. Keep detailed security layouts and alarm codes out of the enquiry form; sensitive plans can be discussed privately.

  • Which buildings, entries or boundaries are in scope?
  • Is this one site or part of a group of sites?
  • What changes between daytime and after-hours use?

2. Explain daily operations.

Shift work, visitors and deliveries all affect the design. Note who needs access, who manages permissions and who reviews footage or responds to alarms.

  • Who opens, closes and manages the site?
  • Do staff, visitors and contractors need different permissions?
  • Who would review footage or respond to an alarm?

3. Review existing equipment.

Describe what works and what needs to change: a doorway outside camera coverage, an unreliable reader or a detector that activates at the wrong time. Equipment models are useful if you know them, but you do not need them to make an enquiry.

  • What equipment or cabling is already installed?
  • What fault or gap prompted the review?
  • Has the site layout or operating pattern changed?

4. Plan the handover.

Decide who will manage permissions, retrieve recordings and arrange maintenance. Discuss the training, testing and documentation needed before your team takes over.

  • Who will administer the system?
  • What do staff need to know on day one?
  • What maintenance or review process will keep it useful?
